A Letter To My 9th Grade Self

Dear Freshman Olivia Martinez,
Today’s your first day of high school and I know exactly how you feel right now. All of your emotions are swirling around in your stomach like butterflies in a tiny cage. I know you feel scared, nervous, and excited all at the same time. As you’re on your way to your new school your emotions are going back and forth between wanting to jump for joy, crawl under a rock, and throw up from nerves and anxiety. But I’m writing this letter to you as a senior about to graduate high school to assure you that everything will be alright and that high school is nothing to fear.
Firstly, I know that you’re mostly scared about high school because of all the freshman “horror stories” and myths that you've heard over the years. And I just wanted to tell you that none of those things will happen to you. In high school there are no “mean girl” cliques, water balloon attacks, and definitely no freshman hazing like everybody says there is. And the crowded hallways full of students constantly moving around like an angry beehive may look intimidating to a little freshman like you, but on the contrary, it’s not that bad at all. It’s just like swimming in a school of fish or driving down the street- you just go with the flow.
Secondly, I know all about how nervous you are too. The anxiety about making new friends, meeting new people, and getting used to a whole new school lifestyle can be nerve racking for anyone. But you have nothing to be nervous about, because you’ll make new friends that you’ll be able to talk to and laugh with. And you’ll learn during the year that there’s nothing scary about meeting new people. And realize that it’s actually kind of fun to get to know someone you didn't know before. You’ll also have no problem with getting used to the high school lifestyle after a couple of weeks. Trust me, after using the same routes to go to and from classes every day and learning how to schedule both homework and projects on time, you’ll become an “old pro” at it easily.
Thirdly, I know that under all the worries and fears that you’re super excited to be starting high school- and with good reason to be. Although it may be intimidating in the beginning, high school is a very fun time where you’re going to transition from a young teen to a responsible young adult who’s ready to leave the nest and soar like an eagle into the world. High school will also hold a lot of fun memories that you’ll always remember, such as prom, ring dance, class trips, orchestra concerts, graduation and so much more. And along the journey of high school you’ll meet many new wonderful people who you’ll always remember and never forget.
All in all, I hope my letter has helped reassure you that high school is not the nightmare you think it is after all. As I bid you a farewell I just have some quick advice to give you; stay true to yourself and remember to be the very best Olivia that you can be. I know you’ll do great!
Sincerely, Senior Olivia Martinez
