Stranded In Nova Scotia
December 17th
2011
Dear Diary,
Stranded. That was what we were. My five friends and I are stranded here in Nova Scotia after
our plane crashed and now we’re stuck here in the freezing cold snow, and the
sharp icy winds. I managed to save this journal and we were all able to save
some of our luggage, but most of our things were lost in the ocean. As we all
sit here huddling together to keep warm I think back on how we all got here in
the first place. I’m stuck here with my friends Asia, Bianca, Erin, and Jakayla
from school – that’s the whole reason we were even on that plane.
We were going with our class to Europe for our winter
trip. Our original flight had been at 3:30 pm, but after we missed that flight
due to our taxi cab breaking down our school decided to send us on a private
charter plane. We only had a pilot and a flight attendant with us and we were so
excited for the trip. About an hour into the flight we seemed to have flown
through a bad storm and got some nasty turbulence. After a couple of minutes of
flying through that turbulence we hear these booms and screeches then next thing
I know we’re spiraling downward and everybody was screaming and crying. When we
crashed I lost consciousness and blacked out. When I finally came to- all my
friends were still unconscious. At first I feared that everybody was dead and
that I would be stranded here all alone but thankfully they all woke up and
everybody felt fine. But, unfortunately I can’t say the same thing for the pilot
and the flight attendant – their bodies were thrown from the plane upon impact
when we crashed.
In all my hast to write about the crash
I forgot to tell about my friends that I’m stranded here with. My friend Asia
is very athletic, medically knowledgeable, and really skilled with a bow and
arrow. She even won first place at the statewide archery competition! She can be
very serious sometimes, but usually she’s really friendly and wants to keep the
peace amongst everyone. My friend Jakayla is very funny and resourceful. She
likes to goof around and just be humorous. Surprisingly she’s very skilled at
sewing and knitting things. My friend Bianca is quite and kind of shy until you
get to know her, but once you do you see that she’s very wise and fun. She’s
multilingual and is an excellent cook. And lastly my friend Erin is very
knowledgeable and inventive - she even won first place at our “Inventor’s Fair”
last year. Erin is really laid back, mellow and generally doesn’t let things
affect her that much. And as for myself I’m smart, musically talented, and
medically knowledgeable. I’m kind and shy sometimes but, I’m also brave when I
need to be and I’m very clever.
So now it’s just us
here all alone. We’ve decided to sleep in the plane for the night. We’re
sleeping huddled close together using some old blankets we found inside of the
plane and the clothes that we managed to save in our luggage. Tomorrow we will
think of things that we’ll need to survive here.

Dear Diary,
Today we
scavenged around through the plane wreckage to see what we could find to help
us. We would need a lot of things to survive here –food, water, shelter, heat,
warm clothing, and hopefully a radio to try to call for help. We found a lot of
food and drinks in the airplane storage compartment -mostly just a lot of small
packages of snacks like peanuts, chips, animal crackers, and pretzels. And
luckily we found the frozen dinners that they serve on the long flights. So
we’ve decided to ration that food that we found and hunt for food as well.. We
found a lot of things to drink like soda, juice, and water inside the plane and
we’re also drinking some of the lake water that we manage to clean by boiling.
For our shelter we decided to use some of the plane’s parachutes to make a tent
near the plane wreckage and we’re currently working on making an igloo. We found
some matches and bandages in any emergency kit that we found in the plane. As
for heat we use a fire for heat and cooking. The only clothing that we have are
the clothes on our backs, and whatever clothing we had in the luggage that we
were able to find. Unfortunately there wasn’t a radio in the airplane that we
could use to radio for help.

Dear Diary,
Today Asia,
Bianca and I wandered around the area to see what our surroundings are. This
whole area is very uninhabited and quite since there is nothing but snow,
mountains, ice, and dense forests. There are a couple of lakes, but
unfortunately they’re frozen over. We’ve started hunting for food too, but we
mostly only hunt small creatures that are easy to catch, kill, and cook like
beavers and squirrels. And Asia occasionally manages to catch some birds that
rarely pass the area and we’ve also manage to catch a lot of fish by breaking a
hole in the frozen lakes. In the hopes of getting rescued we’ve decided to make
a signal fire to attract attention. Hopefully this will help us get
rescued.

Dear Diary,
Today you won’t believe what happened! A wolf
managed to find its way into our camp! So we’ve decided to start making weapons
for defense as well as for hunting for food. We decided to look around to see
what kinds of animals might live here and what we could make to defend
ourselves. We think that wolves, bears, and snow foxes are probably our biggest
concern when it comes to wild animals. For our defense we’ve made bows, arrows,
and sharp spears. I only hope that this will be enough to save us from being
eaten by any other wild animals.

Dear Diary,
We’ve been stranded here in Nova Scotia for over a
week now. And as I look at our little society that we’ve created I’m really
thankful that we haven’t had a lot of drama and conflict between all of us- just
the occasional arguments. We also managed to establish some rules that everybody
follows without argument. We all get along and there really aren’t any “groups”
that separated us. In a way it feels like we’ve all grown to be like family to
each other. On December 25th “Christmas Day” everybody felt sad since we
couldn't be with our families and because our families probably think that we’re
dead. But through that sadness we still managed to celebrate Christmas. We
decorated a small tree near our camp with pine cones and little pieces of cloth
that Jakayla managed to knit. We didn't have any gifts to give each other, but
we did have snowball fights and sat around the fire and told Christmas stories
from our pasts and sung Christmas carols. But today is very special day because
today we hope to finally get rescued. Our signal fire has yet to draw any
attention to this area and we desperately want to leave this place as soon as
possible. So we’ve decided to set the forest on fire to get attention- I really
hope that this works because if we set the forest on fire and we DON’T get
rescued this could end very badly.

Dear
Diary,
IT WORKED!! Setting the forest on fire
really did work! Our fire caught the attention of the coast guard who sent a
rescue squad for us. We were so happy to finally have been rescued that we
jumped and cried for joy. Right now as I write this entry we’re on a plane back
to America to be reunited with our families! As I look around at my friends that
I’ve had to endure this disaster with- I smile because I know that we have
survived.
