I chose to add my "Hamlet: A Work of Art" essay to my senior portfolio because I had a lot of fun creating it and it’s one of my all-time favorite projects because I got to use art in it. In my class we were reading the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare and the play was about a young prince named Hamlet whose father recently passed away quickly and mysteriously. After his father's death his mother quickly re-married Hamlet's uncle and soon finds out that his father was murdered by his own brother- the new king. The whole play is about Hamlet and his decision to get revenge against the man who killed his father. The assignment was to create a work of art that displays what I thought the character Hamlet would look like in a painting or work of art. This was my favorite essay to write because I got to make a painting and was able to analyze my artwork. When I analyzed my artwork I was mostly explaining why I created Hamlet's look the way that I did. And it allowed me to use my AP Art History skills that I had learned from the year before to go more in-depth about my artistic reasoning. In the beginning when I learned that we would have to add quotes to the essay I was actually a little irritated and thought that the quotes would be a huge hindrance when creating my project. However, it was actually the complete opposite. Being able to add quotes to the essay to back up my reasoning was a lot easier than I thought that it would be and it gave my essay a great solid structure.
